West Campus is the neighborhood immediately west of the University of Texas, roughly between Guadalupe Street (“the Drag”) and Lamar Boulevard, from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard up to 29th Street. Since the City of Austin adopted the University Neighborhood Overlay in 2004, allowing taller buildings in exchange for affordable units, its old houses and low-rise complexes have steadily given way to mid- and high-rise apartment buildings, and it is now one of the densest neighborhoods in Texas. It is also the center of UT’s Greek life and its student housing cooperatives.
